The Playmaker difference

Playmaker Ventures is a U.S. based VC investing in seed stage startups in Asia. Our mission reflects our passion to support and back promising founders in Asia to scale their businesses while exceeding expectations on investor returns. We do this through strategic investments into companies that we have the resources to nurture and help grow. The experience and network that we have garnered as operators in the region gives us an advantage to help founders succeed in the disparate and, at times, treacherous markets in Asia.

We maximize these investments by taking a hands-on approach and work alongside portfolio founders in the most exciting, yet most challenging time as founders in new emerging markets in Asia.

Our focus

Geographic, stage and sector

The geographic target for our investments would be seed stage founders operating in, or, targeting markets in Southeast Asia, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and large markets in South Asia such as India.

While we are sector agnostic, there are specific pillars that focus on when making early stage investments. These include consumer mobile tech, B2B tools and Web3. These are areas that we feel have the greatest growth potential over the next decade.

What we look for

We are most interested in companies that are at a stage that we can provide the most value. The ideal founders would be those who are early enough on their journey yet have proven that they can execute on product, have connected directly with early cohort of customers and have reach some type of early signal for growth. Defensibility of technology or business model and size of TAMs is also part of our consideration criteria.

Consumer mobile tech

Mobile tech continues to present enormous opportunities for new solutions to emerge, in the way people live, work, play, shop and interact. We want to be at the forefront of that relentless growth, particularly in Southeast Asia.

B2B Tools

Along with the explosive consumer markets comes with it increased demand for new B2B solutions. We strive to discover the latest in e-commerce tech, payment solutions, marketing, social commerce, customer service, consumer analytics, logistics and market research technologies.

Web3

Web3 is the new frontier of the internet and we want to be on the ground floor of it all. Whether it be technologies that transitions the world from 2.0 to Web3, or companies that are all-in on blockchain, NFT or the metaverse, we want to hear about it.

Our process

We are always on the lookout for outstanding entrepreneurs all over Asia. Below is the overall process that we go through to find the right fit for our fund.

1. Meeting, virtual or otherwise

Reach out to our team via any channel online or off. Given the right stage and focus, we are always open to chatting and learning more about your company. Warm intros always work best.

2. Deck review and initial assessment

Our team will do an initial dive to understand your team, your business and its objectives. We may follow up with additional questions or request for follow on meetings.

3. Due diligence

Once we have established a close fit, our team will conduct further due diligence into your business. This may include deeper dive into the makeup of your team, the technolgy, customer interviews and corporate structure. Just to name a few.

4. A decision is made

Once we get to a place where, not only do we have great confidence in the founders, their business and the market they are after, but also are companies where we can provide the most value, the partners will make a decision to move forward.
